Case Study - Fig Tree Restaurant Project
Ewingsdale, NSW

The Brief

The Fig Tree Restaurant, an iconic culinary destination nestled in the hinterland of Ewingsdale, NSW, sought to deepen its historic connection to regional, estate-grown produce. Known for its sweeping views of Byron Bay and its landmark centenary fig tree, the venue wanted to fully activate its surrounding outdoor margins and underutilised lawn perimeters. The goal was to move away from external regional supply chains for delicate garnishes, and instead establish an on-site, hyper-local source of rare heirloom vegetables, specialized botanicals, and seasonal edible flowers that could directly inspire the daily chef’s menu.

Homegrown Role

Homegrown was engaged as the end-to-end designer, landscape architect, and project manager for the complete agricultural expansion. We engineered a custom, high-productivity organic garden and hyper-local farm system integrated seamlessly into the venue’s existing heritage landscape. Our team implemented tailored sub-surface drainage, designed automated water-efficient irrigation suited to the Northern Rivers climate, managed all specialist regional trades, and directed the project through to successful completion and kitchen handover.

What We Built

  • Custom raised organic hardwood timber garden beds configured to embrace the natural contours and microclimates of the Ewingsdale property.

  • Integrated aesthetic features and living architectural elements designed to blend beautifully with the restaurant's premium, elegant hinterland atmosphere.

  • A 100% organic, bio-intensive living soil ecosystem completely free of synthetic fertilisers, chemical pesticides, or complex plastic hydroponic assemblies.

  • An integrated harvest schedule and planting calendar designed in direct alignment with the culinary team's seasonal, estate-driven menu rotations.

The Results

  • Consistent, high-volume weekly yields of premium organic herbs, leafy greens, and rare botanicals delivered straight to the kitchen line.

  • Zero-Mile Logistics: Total elimination of mid-tier transport, cold-chain refrigeration costs, and single-use plastic produce packaging.

  • Unmatched Quality Control: Produce is harvested at the absolute peak of its physiological maturity and flavour profile, mere minutes before service.

  • Powerful Brand Storytelling: The visible, thriving garden became a central pillar of the restaurant's identity, driving extensive media coverage, patron admiration, and community engagement.

  • Enhanced Patron Experience: Guests can stroll through the productive edible landscape before their meal, establishing a distinct, premium market positioning as a pioneer in radical culinary transparency.

'“This kitchen garden expansion has fundamentally redefined our relationship with our ingredients here in Ewingsdale. The depth of flavour, structural integrity, and vibrant colour we get from harvesting directly from our own soil is something traditional wholesale distribution simply cannot replicate.”

Jack Lewis, Executive Chef, Fig Tree Restaurant

Is Your Space Adequate?

We specialise in identifying, activating, and optimising underutilised commercial footprints. If your venue features any of the following spaces, we can engineer an extraordinary, high-yielding asset:

Rooftops and Terraces

Flat or low-pitch roofs are ideal environments for intensive, raised organic bed systems. Even a modest footprint can yield a highly meaningful, continuous supply of premium specialty ingredients and create a stunning visual focal point for your venue.

Courtyards, Balconies & Al Fresco Dining Spaces

Concrete courtyards, bare walkways, and underutilised outdoor seating areas can be seamlessly converted into lush, edible landscapes. These living installations dramatically enhance the biophilic appeal of your dining environment, drawing patrons in.

Perimeters, Structural Margins & Entrance Ways

Property boundary lines, empty entrance pathways, and structural perimeters are frequently overlooked. We transform these dead zones into striking, high-impact edible landscapes that signal your venue's dedication to quality the second a guest arrives.
